If your child is a struggling reader (or if you just want to help your child read better) it is very helpful for you - the parent - to:
- Read the same books as your child. After you read the book, article, magazine…, discuss it with your child.
- Ask your child questions about the material that he or she reads.Below is a list of “Question Stems”. Question Stems are “sentence starters”. You complete the sentences with information from the book. These question stems mimic the way questions on the EOG are worded. Use these types of questions when talking with your child about books that he or she is reading.
- Maintain a journal that you and your child use to write to each other about the book that you are both reading. If you each write a paragraph or more in the journal at least twice each week and then respond to each other at least twice per week, your child can earn an extra 100 in the grade book each marking period. The journal will need to be turned in to Mrs. VanHook during the last week of the marking period. It will be recorded as an “Over and Above” grade.
- Encourage your child to read nonfiction and discuss it with you. Perhaps buy sports or teen magazines. Perhaps read newspapers. Nonfiction is our focus!
