Students already have a copy of the following information. I am posting it here in case a child looses his or hers.
Accelerated Reading
Accelerated Reader Expectations - First Marking Period
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a wonderful opportunity that helps all of us improve our reading and reading comprehension skills. We will use AR as a component of our Reading Program. We will use various methods and strategies in class that will help us all to excel in our reading, but you will be responsible for how well you do in AR. Here are my guidelines:
- Each student is required to read and test on at least ONE AR book every two weeks. You may read more if you want to, but this is the minimum.
- If you do not score at a level that you desire on a book, don’t fret! Simply read another book and take a test on it. I will only record the highest score for each two week period.
- The AR scores count in the gradebook as “classwork” grades.
- During each marking period, you are required to do a Book Talk on one of the books that you read. The student gets to choose which book to present to the class. We will have a Book Talk sign-up sheet posted in the classroom. It is your responsibility to sign-up for the day you want. You must present on the day you choose. If you miss that date, you will receive a zero on the assignment. Be responsible and be on point!
- The grade for your Book Talks will count equal to a test grade in the gradebook.
The following dates and guidelines apply to AR:
1st Marking Period
- We will go to the library for our time with Mrs. Below during the next two weeks.. This will be the day that we take the Star Reading test. It is also your first opportunity for book check-out. Limit your choices to four books.
- All required AR reading for our class this year will be nonfiction. However, I want to encourage you to also read at least on fiction book per marking period.
- You are required to read within your range for reading improvement. Everyone may choose their first nonfiction book based simply on their own interests. After Mrs. VanHook has set up reading folders, you will have to choose books in the agreed-upon reading range.
- Mrs. VanHook never count points with AR. Those only count if you want to be involved in the Out-read Mrs. Below challenge and when Mrs. Below figures up which class on each hall has the highest reading total for the marking period. Points never factor into class grades.
- You must read four nonfiction books during marking period one. One of those books must be a biography or an autobiography.
- The marking period one due dates are:
- 9/11
- 9/25
- 10/9
- 10/23
- The student will choose the book that he or she would like to present to the class.
- The presentation should last approximately ten minutes.
- (10 points) The presentation should be in the form of a Powerpoint. We will not do presentation boards without special permission. Special permission will only be granted if the student does not have access to a computer.
- (5 mpoints) The Powerpoint should be emailed to Mrs. VanHook at [email protected].
- (5 points) The presentation should include detailed information from the book, as well as pictures from any source chosen.
- (5 points) The presentation should include at least 10 slides.
- (5 points) Reference must be given to the source of all information.
- (5 points) Close attention must be given to proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
- (5 points) The presentation must have a cover (Title) slide that includes the Title of the book, the author of the book and the publisher of the book. It must also include the student’s name and Mrs. VanHook listed as the instructor.
- There should be at least one slide for each of the following:
- (10 points) Five new words that are pertinent to the topic must be presented. Their definition must be provided.
- (20 points) An interesting discussion of each major item from the book should be presented. (For example, if the book is on reptiles the student will have slides on each of the major reptiles in the book that includes pictures and facts.)
- (10 points) At least one slide that makes one of the following connections:
- Text to self
- text to text
- text to world
- text to media
- (10 points) One slide that talks about why this topic is important for young people to know about and shares how the presenter plans to use the information learned.
